Why is marketing OPEX below budget in May?

Marketing OPEX is 412 kPLN (−12.4%) below budget. The main reason is the Q2 campaign moved to June (380 kPLN) – a timing shift, not a permanent saving. The remaining 32 kPLN is a saving on media buying.

Fincorex AI helping controllers create Narrative Reporting

01

A dialogue with your data

Ask questions as if you were talking to a teammate.

02

Better interpretation

AI combines financial and operational data into one consistent analysis.

03

Support for business area owners

Clear, personalized explanations of variances and their root causes.

Fincorex AI

You ask a question in natural language, and the AI analyzes the relevant data, runs the calculations and gives a business answer with its reasoning.

Fincorex AI connects to language models available online or installed locally. It works in read-only mode: it analyzes data in the system, but does not store it outside the client’s environment or use it to train external models. Access is limited by the user’s permissions in the EPM system.

04

Objective storytelling

Ready-made management commentary based on data, not opinions.

05

Cutting through the noise

Separates significant trends from one-off data variances.

06

Support for strategic decisions

The system helps translate numbers into business scenarios.

Classic report vs. Narrative Reporting

Classic report
Narrative Reporting
–Raw numbers without context or explanation
✓Data enriched with context and root causes
–No information on the causes of variances
✓Automatic identification of key variances
–Interpreting the data is left to the reader
✓Ready conclusions and recommendations for the board
–The board wastes time looking for explanations
✓A consistent format for every audience and period
–No single, consistent interpretation of the data
✓More time for decisions, less for preparation

Mistakes that cost more than you think

In thousands of rows of data it’s easy to miss what matters most, even for an experienced controller. Here are four common mistakes in interpreting financial results.

01

Focusing on the bottom line

In a report, we look at the overall result first, e.g. profit or plan achievement. When it looks good, it’s easy to assume everything works and skip the details.

Yet problems often hide further down: rising costs in cost centers, a falling margin in a segment or inefficient processes. The headline figure alone can distort the picture of the company and delay the response to risks.

02

Selective interpretation of data

We naturally focus on data that confirms our first conclusions. A good result in one segment can then mask a steady margin decline in another.

It’s not a question of competence but of scale: with many variables, it’s hard to account for all of them at once. The result is a wrong diagnosis and decisions based on an incomplete picture.

03

Confusing trends with fluctuations

Short-term fluctuations in revenue, costs or margin often result from seasonality, one-off events or accounting shifts. Yet a single variance is sometimes taken for a lasting trend.

The company then fixes what works or downplays real warning signs. Without separating noise from trend, the risk of wrong decisions grows.

04

Emotional interpretation of results

The same number can sound different. “90% of plan achieved” and “−10% variance to budget” say the same thing but trigger different reactions.

Managers stress successes, controlling stresses risks, and the board looks through the lens of strategy. Without one structured interpretation, optimism or panic replaces a conversation about facts.

Webinar — Narrative Reporting with Fincorex AI

How AI improved the dialogue between controlling and the business

Month-end close processes are labor-intensive and data is scattered. Even though information is technically available in EPM systems, the key challenge remains effective analysis and timely delivery of concise conclusions to management.

Narrative Reporting is a method of presenting financial data that combines numbers with a substantive description, operational context and professional interpretation. How to do it well? Watch the webinar →

Presenting data in Power BI

Narrative summary

A text report in which numerical values are filled in automatically from EPM data.

Advantages of this format
  • ✓Complex metrics described in a clear narrative, also for people outside finance.

A summary in the form of a card with a visual description: a template combined with text, plus a table of figures.

Advantages of this format
  • ✓Combines specific figures with their visualization.
  • ✓Offers both a quick summary and the option to explore the data.
  • ✓Works well, e.g., when discussing results in meetings.
